About our Melbourne Convention Centre Accommodation
Gem Apartments Short Stay in the Vue Grande building was born in 2009 and quickly became a hit with travellers looking for accommodation near the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre.
Since then we’ve watched the area grow up around us. South Wharf DFO shopping centre opened in 2010, and was prematurely dubbed a white elephant by The Age newspaper…..
A few years later the South Wharf river dining precinct was established and it is now a vibrant lunch and dinner hub which is slightly less busy than the Crown Restaurants.
Crown Casino itself has seen some major changes, with restaurant changes along the Yarra River, expanded gambling areas and new nightclubs. There has also been a total overhaul Playtime Crown, with King Pin bowling alley being particularly impressive. The new Kin Pin suits adults and children alike with less bowling alleys (not as noisy), great food & wine and a super luxe fit out. There is also laser tag, Village Cinemas and a Timezone to entertain the little kids & big kids.
Behind us South Melbourne Village has largely retained it’s old school magic, with the South Melbourne Markets and streets lined with circa 1800’s heritage listed buildings. Next to the South Melbourne Markets is a large new supermarket complex with Woolworths, Dan Murphys, Amcal Pharmacy and Aldi among the major tenants.
Gem Short Stay Apartments share an intersection with Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, Crown Metropol and Crown Casino. Other conveniences are:
a decent IGA plus liquor on the ground floor if you don’t feel like the five minute walk to Woolworths.
Number 96 and 109 super tram stop outside, with trams going through the city in one direction and to Port Melbourne & St Kilda Beaches in the other direction
Departure and Arrival Point for Melbourne’s famous Tramcar Restaurant
One Stop / Five Minute Walk from the Melbourne Free Tram network throughout the city.
We love the location because it offers the best of both worlds, easy access to Melbourne CBD (city) and South Melbourne Village (upmarket suburb). If you want to stretch your legs, you can wander along Southbank Promenade and you will arrive at Federation Square/ Flinders St Station in approximately ten minutes.
Our apartments are perfect for the corporate traveller, offering flexible bedding configurations and unlimited wifi. All of our melbourne short stay apartments have balconies, full kitchens and laundries.
Most of our short stay apartments are located at 63 Whiteman Street, Southbank (Vue Grande) except for the four bedroom short stay apartments and Podium Penthouse at Freshwater Place.
